The Party 20th Anniv.
In conjunction with music blog We Shot JR, the Deep Ellum Foundation is hosting the 20th Anniversary of The Party, the storied DJ collective. The event at Sons of Hermann Hall is from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, November 21 to close out the Deep Ellum Block Party.
Featuring DJs Nature—who now performs with Ìfé—from New Orleans; Select from New York City; and Sober, in Oak Cliff—The Party formed in 2006 evolving from a modest Denton Weekly before drawing sold-out crowds. The trio has a sound that defined the neon-colored Aughts, blending dancehall, Baltimore club, and indie dance tracks. They shared bills with Justice, CobraSnake, Flosstradamus, Roxy Cottontail, and many others circa 2006-2010. The reunion gives a more historically accurate representation of how the so-called “indie sleaze” age really sounded—and looked.
New Jersey’s Mike Simonetti is a founder of the labels Troubleman Unlimited, Italians Do It Better, and Two Mikes Records. Simonetti’s releases have had an influence on both underground and mainstream music and his legendary Aerosol Burns events in Brooklyn featured unannounced sets by the likes of The Fall. Simonetti recently collaborated with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor.
New York’s Amores—fka Killtron—co-hosted the Hot Flash nights at Fallout Lounge during Expo Park’s heyday. Amores is joined by Schwa, also of Hot Flash. Schwa founded the Cool Out weekly that used to be the sound of Greenville Avenue.
Live/hardware acts will be on a separate floor: Dallas artist Falvo (John Falvo & his Daggers, Resigned to Fate) will perform a rare set of synth material.
Falvo is followed by a tape collage and soundscape set by R. Buttrum (Vaults of Zin, Dirty Diamond; Out of Body Records), who recently marked 20 years of his House of Tinnitus booking entity.
In a special appearance from Seattle will be cosmic beat-maker and former Denton resident, Jena Von Jupiter (Sundae Crush/Layer Cake). Von Jupiter has a colorful new dance record out called “Haunt.”
Battery Licker features members of Sir Name and the Janes, Touch Tongues, and Street Hassle—all bands We Shot JR covered. Battery Licker is a bass-forward, industrial-adjacent group.
Event is free.
